Guide
Google Local Service Ads for painters: the complete guide
Short answer: Google Local Service Ads are the listings at the very top of Google, above the regular ads and the map pack. Homeowners see your name, rating and reviews and call or message you directly. You pay Google per lead, usually $30 to $70, not per click, and bad leads can be refunded. To run them, a painting company has to pass Google's license, insurance and background checks.

What Local Service Ads are
When a homeowner searches "painter near me" or "house painters in [their city]", Google often shows a block of sponsored painters at the very top of the page. That block is Local Service Ads. Each listing shows the business name, star rating, number of reviews, years in business and a button to call or message.
The homeowner picks a painter and contacts them directly. Nobody resells that lead or sends it to other contractors. That is the biggest difference from lead-selling services.
Local Service Ads vs Google Ads vs lead sites
| Local Service Ads | Google search ads | Lead-selling sites | |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay for | Each lead (a call or message) | Each click, whether they call or not | Each lead, often shared |
| Where you show | Very top of Google | Below Local Service Ads | On their site, not yours |
| Who else gets the lead | No one | No one | Often several contractors |
| Needs a website | No | Yes | No |
| Refunds for bad leads | Yes, through disputes | No | Varies |
Getting verified as a painting company
Before your ad can show, Google checks three things:
- Business license, where your state or city requires one for painting.
- General liability insurance, with your business name matching your other documents.
- A background check on the owner.
Plan on 2 to 4 weeks. The most common delay is a name that does not match across the license, the insurance certificate and the profile. We handle the paperwork for our clients, and if you do not get verified, you get your money back.
What a painting lead costs
Most painting leads cost between $30 and $70, paid directly to Google. Why the range is so wide:
- Lead type. Text message leads are usually cheaper, around $30 to $40. Phone call leads are usually closer to $60 to $70.
- Market. Big metro areas with many painters cost more than smaller towns.
- Competition. The more painters bidding in your area, the higher the price.
- Job type. Some kinds of painting jobs cost more per lead than others.
You set a weekly budget, and most painters start between $150 and $400 a week. No leads, no charge.

How Google ranks painters
Google decides which painters show first, and in what order, using a handful of signals:
- Distance between your service area and the homeowner.
- Review score and number of reviews.
- Responsiveness: how quickly and how often you answer calls and messages.
- Business hours: if you show as closed, you show less.
- Complaints: serious or repeated complaints hurt your ranking.
- Budget: a budget that runs out early in the week takes you off the page.
Responsiveness is the one most painters lose on. A homeowner who reaches voicemail usually calls the next painter on the list, and Google notices the missed call too.
Disputing bad leads
Not every call is a real job. Spam, sales calls, requests for services you do not offer and homeowners outside your area should not cost you anything. Google lets you dispute these leads and credits them back. Most painters never have time to do this, so they pay for leads they should not. We review and dispute leads for our clients every week and show the refunds in the weekly report.
Why lead volume goes up and down
- Season. Painting demand rises in spring and summer and drops in winter in most of the country.
- Budget. If the weekly budget is spent by Wednesday, you disappear for the rest of the week.
- Response time. Missed calls lower your ranking, which lowers future leads.
- Reviews. A competitor who gains reviews faster can move above you.
- Hours and service area. Short hours or a small service area limit how often you can show.
Most of our clients see 5 to 15 calls a month, and some get 20 in a week. Nobody can honestly guarantee a ranking or a number of leads.

Answer every lead
Because responsiveness affects ranking, and because homeowners call the next painter when nobody picks up, answering every lead is as important as getting them. Our AI answering service picks up the calls you miss, gathers the job details and texts them to you, and replies to text leads within seconds, 24/7. Try it yourself:
What painters say
"The Painter Promotions AI assistant has been fantastic. A lot of times I am tied up in my schedule and cannot pick up every phone call. It started with the LSA ads, and anyone coming through an LSA ad needs to be responded to quickly. Whether that is by a text or a phone call, the response has been great. Customers have actually been happy that someone was there to take down their information and help them feel like their concerns are being taken care of. For me, it has been great that I get a text message after the call with all the info: their name, address and what they need done. It also helps screen out people calling about things that are not related to getting an estimate. If I cannot pick up, the call goes to an assistant that can talk to them just like a real person and help them feel heard."
Caleb McGowan, That 1 Painter Tallahassee and South Georgia
"We started working together in March this year. It has increased my jobs by 25%. The expense has been one of the lower forms of advertising, and you have been great to work with. I have gotten a hold of you directly the first time and never even had to leave a message."

FAQ
Are Local Service Ads worth it for painting companies?
For most residential painters, yes. You only pay for leads, not clicks, the homeowner calls you directly, and nobody else gets that lead. They work best when you answer fast, have good reviews and can keep a steady weekly budget.
How much do Local Service Ads cost for painters?
Typically $30 to $70 per lead, paid to Google. Text message leads are usually around $30 to $40 and phone leads closer to $60 to $70. Market, competition and job type also change the price. Most painters start with $150 to $400 a week.
How long does it take to get verified?
Plan on 2 to 4 weeks. Google checks your business license, your general liability insurance and a background check on the owner. Name mismatches between documents are the most common cause of delays.
What is the difference between Local Service Ads and Google Ads?
Google Ads (search ads) charge per click and send people to your website. Local Service Ads charge per lead, sit above the regular ads, and connect the homeowner straight to your phone or messages.
Do I need a website to run Local Service Ads?
No. Your Local Service Ads profile shows your name, rating, reviews, service area and hours, and the homeowner contacts you from there.
Can I get money back for bad leads?
Yes. Leads that are spam, for a service you do not offer, or outside your service area can be disputed with Google and credited back. We file these disputes for our clients every week.
How do reviews affect my ranking?
Your review score and number of reviews are among the main things Google uses to decide which painters show first. Asking every happy customer for a review is one of the best things you can do.
Why did my leads slow down?
Common reasons: the season, a budget that runs out early in the week, slow responses to leads, business hours that are too short, or new competitors in your area. Each one can be checked and usually fixed.
